Record 83 Satellites in One Go

ISRO said it would launch a record 83 satellites in one go using its workhorse PSLV-C37 toward the end of January. "We are working for a January launch. It will be toward the end of January. The date has to be fixed," Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman A S Kiran Kumar told reporters here. Of the 83 satellites, 80 belong to Israel, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Switzerland and the US. They weigh about 500 kg. The three Indian satellites are Cartosat-2 series, weighing 730 kg as primary payload, and INS-IA and INS-1B, weighing 30 kg. Setting a record in its space programme, ISRO in June had successfully launched 20 satellites, including its earth observation Cartosat-2 series, in a single mission on board PSLV-C34 from the spaceport in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The space agency had earlier sent 10 satellites into orbit on a single mission in 2008. Calling 2016 a "good" year, Kumar said ISRO would launch at least five communication satellites in 2017.

"It (launches) will be more next year, we are actually looking at almost something like five communication satellites, then many more others. Some earth observation also," he said in response to a question on the number of launches that can be expected in 2017. "In the year we are primarily trying to do our GSLV Mark III, then Mark II... one more launch we are trying to do," Kumar said.

The first three months should see three launches, beyond which ISRO was targeting almost one a month, he said on the sidelines of the 21st convocation of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) here. Stating that 2016 was a good year because ISRO was able to improve on what they were doing the previous year, Kumar said the main emphasis now was on building capacity. "We need more and more capacity, launch capacity. We are working toward that. Our effort is to continuously increase," he added.

On transponder augmentation that ISRO is looking for, he said, "GSAT-17 is having another 48 transponders, then there is a SAARC satellite which will have about 12 transponders, then we are getting into the next generation GSAT-11 and GSAT-19. We are trying to do something like 14 gigabyte and 90 gigabyte type of thing- multi beam satellites." Noting that ISRO is conducting tests for hazard avoidance for Chandrayaan 2 as it lands, he said, "We are verifying the performance of the system as designed." "Chandrayaan 2, we are preparing for hazard avoidance, as it lands then it has to avoid boulders and things. We are verifying the performance of the system as designed, so there are some craters created and as it comes down how it negotiates. We are evaluating the performance of the system," he added. ISRO has been conducting these tests at its facility in Challakere in Chitradurga district of Karnataka.

'The world's most dangerous man'

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un heads into 2017 with two things that loom ominous for the rest of the world -- he's tested a nuclear weapon, and no one really knows how willing he'd be to use one in anger. North Korea conducted two nuclear tests in 2016, one in January and another, its most powerful ever, in September. Add that to a string of missile tests, both land- and sea-launched, and the world has plenty of reason for worry. But just how much of a threat does North Korea pose? 
Pyongyang's September test put North Korea's nuclear program in its strongest position ever, at least according to the Kim regime, which claimed to have successfully detonated a nuclear warhead that could be mounted on ballistic rockets. North Korean state media said the test would enable North Korea to produce "a variety of smaller, lighter and diversified nuclear warheads of higher strike power." Western experts fear that could expand the range of North Korea's nuclear weapons, possibly putting Alaska, Hawaii or even the US mainland in danger. Combining nuclear warheads with ballistic missile technology in the hands of a volatile leader like Kim Jong Un is a recipe for disaster. The warhead tested in September was estimated to have a 10-kiloton explosive power, almost twice as large as the one tested in January, said Kim Nam-wook of South Korea's Meteorological Administration. The atomic bomb dropped by the US on Hiroshima in 1945 is estimated at 15 kilotons. Despite Pyongyang's apparent progress on a warhead, Bennett, the Rand analyst, points out that North Korea's test of its delivery systems, those missiles and rockets, weren't promising enough to make it a global threat -- at least not yet. "To be such, the North would need to have developed some form of reliable delivery mechanism for its nuclear weapons that could reach anywhere in the world. And the North has not yet done that," Bennett said, pointing out that of the eight tests of longer range missiles (2,000 miles or more), seven were considered failures, and the other was tested only over a short range.

And despite testing a submarine-launched missile in August, the North has only one submarine capable of launching such a missile -- and its range is short, making it unlikely to get past Western defenses to pose a threat beyond Asia, added Bennett. Doubts about its delivery capabilities notwithstanding, North Korea remains the only country on Earth to test a nuclear weapon in the 21st century -- and that offers Kim considerable leverage, analysts say, especially with his continued ability to tolerate the West's only real weapon short of military action, economic sanctions.

'Snowden warned Americans of 'turnkey tyranny' that opens door to illegal search & seizures'

Edward Joseph Snowden is an American computer professional, former Central Intelligence Agency employee, and former contractor for the United States government, who copied and leaked classified information. Edward Snowden, like me and others, take one oath, and one oath only, and that is to protect and defend the Constitution of the US against all enemies – foreign and domestic, Ray McGovern, former CIA analyst, told RT. Edward Snowden has responded to a damning House Intelligence report analyzing his life and possible motives for revealing NSA surveillance. The 37-page review  provides some details of the NSA whistleblower, discussing Snowden's focus on his incompetencies and disagreements with supervisors. According to the report, Snowden has been in contact with Russian intelligence agencies since his arrival in Moscow.

The whistleblower “has had, and continues to have, contact with Russian intelligence services,” and that he “remains a guest of the Kremlin to this day,” the report says. Snowden denied the accusation, saying in a Tweet "they claim without evidence I'm in cahoots with Russian intel. Everyone knows this is false, but let's examine their basis: Snowden became the focus of worldwide attention after he made public top secret NSA files in 2013 after he fled the US and was given asylum in Russia later that year.

RT: This new report on Edward Snowden communicating with foreign intelligence agencies has been declassified. Why does Snowden pose a risk?

Ray McGovern: He poses no risk now. What he did pose is a risk to the reputations of the people on this very same committee, who are complicit in gross violations by the NSA of the Fourth Amendment of our Constitution. This goes back to basics. Ed Snowden, like me and like so many other army officers, and others, take one oath, and one oath only, and that is to protect and defend the Constitution of the US against all enemies – foreign and domestic.

Now, he saw the Fourth Amendment being grossly violated. The Fourth Amendment comes out of our experience with the British oppressors way back before our Revolution. It states the right of the people to be secure. So it has to do with personal security – the right of the people to be secure from unreasonable searches and seizures, whether on their persons, their houses, their papers, or effects shall not be violated, and no warrant shall issue except upon probable cause supported by oath or affirmation and specifically defining the places to be searched, or the people or things to be seized. And nothing could be clearer. This was a gross violation.

General [Michael] Hayden, who bowed to Dick Cheney and George Bush’s dictum, said 'go ahead violate that.' He was accused by a former head of NSA, Bobby Ray Inman, as having 'clearly violated the law.' Bill Odom, another predecessor as Director of the NSA, said: 'Hayden should be court-martialed, and the President should be impeached for such a gross violation of the Fourth Amendment.' This is what this is all about. That is why Ed Snowden said we’re about to have “turnkey tyranny” here because everybody is being monitored – you can’t have any protection against unreasonable searches and seizures.

RT: The report also criticized the response of US intelligence to Snowden's revelations, saying it failed to review all of the documents he released thoroughly. Surely intelligence agencies are drilled in how to respond to such leaks?

RM: Well, that shows what we call the eunuch-ism. The House Intelligence Committee members are eunuchs… Apparently, they asked the CIA to do this, or the NSA to do this. [And the response was] ‘thanks very much, but we’re not going to do that.’ Hello! This is overseership? So the so-called oversight committees of the Congress are not only complicit in approving this kind of thing, but they have become more properly called the ‘overlooked committees.’ They like to overlook these things. When push comes to shove here, and Ed Snowden says: “Look, I took this oath to defend the Constitution. I am going to do that, and to do that I have to expose these gross violations.” He does it, and they all fall like a pack of wolves after him saying he’s a ‘Russian spy.' Give me a break! I thought that went out about three decades ago.

RT: US officials have focused more on Snowden's punishment, rather than what he actually revealed. Why has that been the case?

RM: It is quite simple. They make these charges about ‘grave damage’ having occurred. It reminds me of Bradley Manning, Chelsea Manning now, when he or she released those documents on war crimes in Iraq, Afghanistan and all kinds of chicanery in the State Department, Robert Gates, the Head of the Department of Defense, came up and said: “This is awful. This endangers our troops. People are going to be get killed because of that.” And the Head of the Senate’s Armed Services Committee said: “Well, please give me a memo on that. I am interested in that.” Six weeks later the memo came back signed by Gates, and it’s said: “Well, actually, our fears and our charges were significantly overwrought.” What I see in this report are charges that are unsubstantiated, as well as significantly overwrought. Many of them are just petty little things that are shown on the record to be erroneous.

For example, they say that Snowden got out of the Army Special Forces training because he had shin splints. Oh my God! The army records show he fractures. He was on crutches when he was released. How can they falsify that? It is going to be in Barton Gellman’s book. And Gellman has looked at this stuff now. He was one of the people who interviewed. And what he says is that this is contemptuous of fact. He knows these things. It wasn’t shin splints, it was broken legs. That is petty kind of stuff that they are charging Ed Snowden of. And this business is about running into problems with the supervisors. Well, I know about that. Because one of his co-workers went to Forbes magazine and she said, ‘You know, I don’t know if Edward Snowden did the right thing or not, but I really hate the character assassination because Ed was a terrific guy. He defended us when our managers came down hard on us for no good reason. He stood up for us… And now it’s coming out that he was insubordinate with his bosses. Well, good for him if he was defending his co-workers.

How Realistic Is the Interstellar Ship from 'Passengers'?

The Starship Avalon, from the movie "Passengers" seems to have been inspired by some real-world science. The movie "Passengers," which opened yesterday (Dec. 21), explores the fascinations and perils of interstellar travel, but could the kind of starship portrayed in the movie ever exist in real life? The film begins on board the Starship Avalon, which is carrying more than 5,000 passengers to a distant, habitable planet known as Homestead. Travelling at half the speed of light, the crew and passengers are expected to hibernate for 120 years before arriving. That is, until somebody accidentally wakes up 90 years early. Is there anything remotely realistic about this spaceship? Space.com posed that question to several space travel experts, as well as Guy Hendrix Dyas, the film's production designer. Dyas looked at the history of movie spaceships (including the vehicles from the "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" universes) in his quest to come up with something unique for the new film.

The Avalon has three long, thin modules that wrap around a common center and spin (sort of like stripes on a barbershop pole). Dyas said he based that design on sycamore seeds. It appears that the spin also provides the ship with artificial gravity, similar to fictional ships in the movies "Interstellar" and "2001: A Space Odyssey." The ship is powered by eight nuclear fusion reactors, Dyas said, and can run autonomously, healing most systems even with the crew asleep (as seen in the film).

The ship's immense structure is about 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) in length, and Dyas said he imagines that it was assembled in space over decades. The film takes place at an indeterminate point in the future, Dyas said, but he assumed that by the time the ship was being built, humans would have the ability to mine some of the materials from nearby asteroids or the moon to save on transportation costs.

"My approach to the [ship] design was that I tried to go about it as though I was a cruise liner ship designer," Dyas told Space.com. "I wanted to put myself in the shoes of somebody who had been designing a craft that had a portion of it dedicated to entertainment, and of course that led to the array of colors and textual changes in the ship."

This approach led Dyas to design the more functional areas (such as the mess hall) in stainless steel, while a classy passenger pub was decorated in rich oranges, golds and reds, for example. Banks of hibernation pods occupy huge halls in the ship. The crew slumbers in separate quarters, inaccessible to the passengers. The pods are clustered into small groups, perhaps (Dyas suggests) so that if one group's cluster fails, at least the other 5,000 passengers are theoretically unaffected.

The hibernation procedure is not really described in the film, but what's clear to moviegoers is what happens afterward: passengers are soothed by a holographic figure explaining where they are. They are escorted to an elevator, then guided to their individual cabin, where they can relax for the last four months of the journey. In between resting in their quarters, passengers can also get to know the rest of the 5,000 people in common areas, such as the mess hall, the grand concourse, the pool or the bar.

Interstellar propulsion
Nuclear fusion is a possible source of propulsion for interstellar ships, but the problem is the size of the reactors that would need to be assembled in space, or launched there, according to some scientists we talked to. So other methods are being considered to get spacecraft going at interstellar speeds.

One idea under consideration by Philip Lubin, a physics professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, uses lasers. Under another NIAC grant, he is developing a concept known as Directed Energy Propulsion for Interstellar Exploration, which would generate propulsion from laser photons reflected in a mirror. The long-term goal is to create a spacecraft that can, like in "Passengers," move at a significant fraction of the speed of light.

Antimatter engines are another possibility for fueling interstellar ships, said Andreas Tziolas, the co-founder and president of Icarus Interstellar. Antimatter particles are naturally occurring particles that are "opposites" to regular matter particles — so the positron is the antimatter equivalent to the electron; the particles have the same mass but are different in other ways, including electric charge (the electron is negative, the positron is positive). When matter and antimatter collide, they annihilate, and release energy.

Though it's not stated directly it the film, it's possible the "Passengers" ship is being fueled by the interstellar medium — the tenuous collection of hydrogen particles that populate much of the universe. This concept was proposed in a 1960 thought experiment by American physicist Robert Bussard, who argued it would allow a ship to travel without having to haul fuel along for the ride.

But there's a problem with that idea, according to Geoffrey Landis, a science fiction author and NASA physicist. Since 1960, scientists have discovered that the medium is too sparse to allow fusion to happen, Landis said.

"The idea was, if you don't carry your fuel with you, you might be able to avoid having a simply enormous fuel tank," he said. From a practical standpoint, Landis also agreed that a ship that size would likely have to be built largely in space, and that will probably require asteroid mining.

While asteroid mining is still in the future, there are a couple of companies that are getting started on prospecting. Both Deep Space Industries and Planetary Resources have plans to scout out nearby asteroids to learn about their composition, and the possibilities for getting spacecraft out there. Asteroid-mining technology is in an early stage, but both companies are generating other products (such as Earth observation) that have received some support from customers.

Building a business case would take some time, but Landis said it would be very possible to create a spacecraft from extraterrestrial resources.

"In the long term, if we're going to build these enormous habitats, we are going to have to build them from material in space," he said. "That's a very feasible idea. There's literally millions of asteroids out there from which we could harvest materials without having to drag it out of the gravity well of the Earth."

Ship design

Landis also seemed to think that the Avalon creates gravity by rotating.

"I'm getting a little tired of artificial gravity in 'Star Trek' and 'Star Wars,'" he said, referring to the ability of the ships in these long-standing franchises to generate gravity by more theoretical means.

Experts interviewed for the story agreed that, in general, the ship also appears to take into account human factors, which means designing an environment so that it can best accommodate how humans operate.

To further enhance Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) industrialization and support the Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV) project, Cisco, Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia signed Memorandum of Understanding to create the NFV Interoperability Testing Initiative (NFV-ITI).
The main objective of NFV-ITI is to promote competition and create industry alignment on generic principles for NFV interoperability testing and support for specific customer situations.
NFV-ITI will address NFV multi-vendor interoperability challenges for communication service providers, enabling them to optimize NFV deployment and integration costs, and reduce time-to-market for new services.
California‎, US, Stockholm, Sweden, Shenzhen, China, Espoo, Finland, December 20th, 2016 – Cisco, Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia today announced they have signed a MoU to create the NFV Interoperability Testing Initiative (NFV-ITI) that will help communication service providers to address the challenges related to NFV deployment and Cloud transformation within multi-vendor network environments.

The deployment and integration of virtual network functions within today’s multi-vendor environments can introduce new interoperability challenges. To address these challenges, NFV-ITI members will cooperatively support the interoperability of NFV elements in specific customer situations to accelerate the commercial implementations, and to reduce the time-to-market for new applications and services.

All the existing NFV interoperability related testing activities have been triggered by different needs of the industry, including the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) NFV Testing WG, OPNFV testing projects, Network Vendor Interoperability Testing (NVIOT) testing, and the New IP Agency (NIA) interoperability testing.

Complementing all the existing NFV interoperability testing activities in the industry, NFV-ITI will focus on testing interoperability configurations of commercial NFV solutions actually used in the communication service providers’ networks. It will recommend generic principles, including interoperability test cases, test criteria, processes, methods, guidelines, templates, and testing tools, and will also apply best practices from all existing interoperability testing activities in the industry, such as the NVIOT forum efforts. NFV-ITI shall be well-aligned with the ETSI NFV Industry Specification Group and the OPNFV project.

Cisco India Unveils 3 Cyber-Security Initiatives

At a time when cyber security has become paramount for digital enterprises, Cisco India on Thursday announced three new initiatives to help the country build a transparent and secure digital infrastructure environment. Cisco will open a new Security Operations Centre (SOC) in Pune which will provide services ranging from monitoring and management to comprehensive threat solutions and hosted security that can be customised.

The $49.24 billion company also launched a Cisco Cyber Range Lab at its Gurugram facility which will provide specialised technical training workshops to help security staff build the skills and experience necessary to combat new-age cyber threats. Recognising that cyber-security is critical to India's drive to digitise its economy, Cisco's global Security & Trust Organization (S&TO) and Cisco India announced the formation of Cisco S&TO-India that will help the government shape the national cyber-security strategy and initiatives. To achieve this, Cisco and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's (MeitY) Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of Electronics and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

"In light of rapidly evolving cyber tactics and shared risks in cyberspace, the need to work side-by-side with industry partners on pressing cyber-challenges becomes increasingly important. We are happy to have Cisco collaborate with us to enhance the security of India's digital infrastructure," Prasad noted. Under the MoU, Cisco and CERT-In will establish a threat intelligence sharing programme wherein personnel from Cisco and CERT-In will work together to address digital threats and learn new approaches to enhance cyber-security.

Cisco's "Active Threat Analytics" provides round-the-clock monitoring and advanced-analytics capabilities combined with industry-leading threat intelligence and expert investigators to rapidly detect advanced threats. Cisco has three Security Operations Centres worldwide - Poland, the US and Japan. With India as the fourth location, this structure will allow Cisco to provide 24-hour service for customers regardless of time zone.

"As India digitises, security will become fundamental to seizing the unprecedented opportunities for businesses, cities and citizens. Today's cyber-security announcements reaffirm Cisco's long-term commitment to India," added Dinesh Malkani, President, Cisco India and SAARC.

"By 2020, the Indian digital payments industry will grow 10 times and mobile transactions will grow 90 per cent per year by 2020. As of 2016, three new Indians join internet every second and by 2030, one billion Indians will be online so digital security is paramount," Malkani told reporters here. In India, Cisco Network Academy programme has trained 122,000 students and is committed to train an additional 250,000 students by 2020. As per a Cisco report, there are more than one million unfulfilled security jobs worldwide currently. To help increase the pool of talent with critical cyber-security proficiency, the company announced a $10 million Global Cyber-Security Scholarship globally in June.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 'Don’t lose your hope’

 The Portuguese soccer star is making a donation on behalf of the London-based Save the Children organization. (Save the Children) Cristiano Ronaldo is using his voice and platform as an international soccer superstar to help the children of war-ravaged Syria.

On Friday morning, the Real Madrid forward and Portugal national team captain released a video on his social-media accounts calling the children affected by the Syrian conflict “the true heroes” and telling them, “Don’t lose your hope.”

Ronaldo has also made a “generous donation” as an ambassador of the London-based Save the Children international organization to help provide food, clothing and medical care for families in Syria. The organization, which Ronaldo has supported since 2013, said in a statement to The Post that Ronaldo asked Save the Children not to discuss details of his donation but added that it “will help us provide much-needed relief to children from Aleppo and across Syria.”

“This is for the children of Syria,” he said in the video. “We know you have been suffering a lot. I am a very famous player, but you are the true heroes. Don’t lose your hope. The world is with you. I am with you.” After years of brutal fighting between government forces and rebels, the Syrian military declared Thursday that it had regained full control of Aleppo for the first time since 2012. The crisis has decimated buildings in the city, and years of airstrikes have killed civilians caught in the battle — including children.

“Cristiano Ronaldo’s generous donation will help us to support children from Aleppo and across Syria, who have suffered things children should never have to live through,” Save the Children’s Nick Finney said in a statement. “We are tremendously grateful for his life-changing support. Ronaldo is not only one of the world’s most iconic sports figures, but he also has become a beacon of hope for millions of boys and girls worldwide — and hope is something that Syria’s children need now more than ever.” This is not the first time that Ronaldo has lent his support to Syrian children. In March, Ronaldo posted a photo of him and his son, Cristiano Jr., with a photo of Ayman, a five-year-old Syrian refugee and soccer fan. The tweet included a link to Save the Children’s Syrian children relief fund. “With Ronaldo’s help, we can keep the focus on the children of the Syrian war, many of whom have known nothing but war their entire life,” said Carolyn Miles, president and CEO of Save the Children. “After five years of this conflict, we don’t want the world to forget the children — they shouldn’t have to pay the price for the world’s inaction.”
